. . . the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph of the house of David and the virgin's name was Mary. And when the angel had come to her he said. "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women."

The Gabriel Project is an ecumenical movement of churches standing together in their willingness to offer assistance to women facing crisis pregnancies. Each congregation will advertise this willingness by placing a 'Sign of Life' in front of their church. Each congregation will develop its own, unique response to the needs of the mothers under its care. Training, support, encouragement and basic guidelines will be made available to churches. Each congregation will be a witness to our community of the infinite and healing love of God.
Through the Gabriel Project the mother can receive love, care and spiritual and emotional support she needs. The church community is invited to respond to the mother's needs, whatever they may be with respect and confidentiality. An angel (parishioner), will be responsible for on going contact with the mother. The church community accepts the expectant mother with an unconditional love.
The goal of the Gabriel Project is to encourage the church to be the good Samaritan to the woman faced with a crisis pregnancy. The congregation will do this by welcoming and assisting the woman with love. Jesus will be brought into her life and home through the care and concern of the church community. The love of the church community will open the hearts of men and women to recognize the beauty and goodness of God's creation, and His infinite compassion and mercy. The Respect Life Program of the Diocese of Victoria works to instill respect and reverence for all human life, and to bring about a conversion of heart and mind for all to be open to God's special gift of life.

Following the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973 which made abortion legally permissible in all the States, the Rev. Msgr. John Perusina, late pastor of St. Michael Parish on Sage Road, put a sign outside the rectory which said: "If you will have your baby, this parish will help you in every way." The original sign still stands today. This was the beginning of the Gabriel Project. In August 2002, Barbara McCain from Our Lady of Lourdes who used to live in Austin knew of the Gabriel Project, and knew that help was needed here. With just a handful of dedicated friends guided by the Holy Spirit to develop this project at Our Lady of Lourdes, the Gabriel Project has spread throughout the Diocese of Victoria. Today, we have grown to 17 Catholic parishes and missions, and one Baptist Church. This devotion and dedication to serving our Lord has been the success of the Gabriel Project helping mothers in a crisis pregnancy and spreading the news of being the Good Samaritan to others. ![]() Top Back To Victoria Diocese Website The Gabriel Project - National |
